Policy Brief
There is a great concern about the persistence of gender inequity in access to resources and opportunities in the MENA region- especially as a challenge for women genuine contribution to economic growth and social development. Credible reports indicate that the social norms, customs and traditions constitute the root causes.
The Centre of Arab Women Training and Research (CAWTAR) launched a regional project on gender equity and discriminatory social practices, which was fully supported by the Ford Foundation, in 2005. The overall goal of this project is to document experiences of programs, initiatives and projects focusing on these practices in order to learn from what has worked and what has not within the last twenty years in the region. The project’s specific objectives are to disseminate successful institutional strategies to illuminate the interventions of the relevant present and future projects. Secondly, based on what has been learn, the project aims to bring the attention of the governments and donors to gain their support of similar projects attempting to influence social transformation of discriminatory social practices.
