Gender discrimination is a real threat for sustainable development. In spite of different efforts addressing discrimination and aiming to influence social transformation, development actors (including donors, governmental institutions, international and regional organizations, NGOs, practitioners, fieldworks, women groups and the media), they are yet concerned about persistence of discrimination based on social beliefs and practices in the Arabic-speaking MENA region. This is because these practices compromise the citizens’ equitable access to resources and opportunities which is key to social development and economic growth.

CAWTAR has developed the regional project, the Dynamics of Social and Practices and Gender Equity in the Arabic Speaking MENA Region , funded by the Ford Foundation, to assess social change and lessons learnt within the last twenty years. The project objective is to document and promote use of successful experiences and good practices to come up with innovative approaches and practical ways to tackle discriminatory social practices and believes detrimental to gender equity in the region.
